Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) or sometimes
just (SLC) is defined by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) as a
software development process, although it is also a distinct process
independent of software or other information technology
considerations. It is used by a systems analyst to develop an
information system, including requirements, validation, training,
and user ownership through investigation, analysis, design,
implementation, and maintenance. SDLC is also known as information
systems development or application development. An SDLC aims to
result in a high quality system that meets or exceeds customer
expectations, within time and cost estimates, works effectively and
efficiently in the current and planned information technology
infrastructure, and is cheap to maintain and cost-effective to
enhance. SDLC is a systematic approach to problem solving and is
composed of several phases, each comprised of multiple
steps:
SDLC is made up of 6 Phases:
- Preliminary Investigation
- Analysis of System
- Design the System
- Develop the System
- Implement the System
- Maintain the System
When the organisation and the systems analyst have
agreed the definition of the problem, a decision must be made about
the value of continuing with the computerised solution. The
organisation may be convinced that there is a problem to be solved,
and that its solution will be worth the effort and the expense.
However, the systems analyst is being paid to look at the problem,
and its solution, from another point of view. The analyst is an
expert in computer systems and what is possible with computer
systems. This analyst must consider the problem from the point of
view of the computerised part of the solution and make a report to
the organisation saying whether the solution is possible and
sensible. This report is called the feasibility study because it
says whether the solution is feasible.
